The Importance of Foundation
My goal as a teacher is to clearly define Pilates as a physical and mental skill. The building blocks of any effective physical training must include foundational guidelines that are essential to creating a reliable framework for ultimate health and physical fitness.
The Pilates method, when taught as an organized system, gives us the ability to consciously control our alignment and organize our muscle balance to create the optimum environment for health and elite performance. Because I have applied these guidelines to my own training for many years I can attest to their validity. I have also seen the results in others when applied consistently. My clients come from a wide spectrum of individuals, from professional athletes and dancers to health oriented people of all ages and interests, each unique in their needs, habits and patterns of movement. Instead of teaching Pilates as a ‘workout’ I teach it as a ‘system’ that is organized, layered and consistent over time. I have witnessed many of my students who apply the Pilates principles to their practice on the mat and equipment quickly begin to see and feel the changes that occur in their bodies and minds. These foundational principles allow us to control the effects of the external forces that act on our bodies, ultimately enabling improved overall physical performance. When we become the masters of our own unique physical capabilities, we live better and more fulfilled lives.
Philosophy
Integration of Mind & Body
I believe in the power of our own conscious awareness to achieve more of our true physical potential.
Integration of Mind & Body
Pilates is the ultimate integration of the mind and body.
Every movement requires us to be diligent in our pursuit of precision and balanced muscular control that starts in the mind and is transmitted to the body. Over time and consistent practice, there is no other physical discipline that can deliver the depth of human potential through the practice of control and awareness at every level of physical movement.
Organization as Foundation
I believe that the human body responds best to an organized system of movement training in order to create a foundation for all other physical disciplines.
Organization as Foundation
Pilates, when presented as a complete system, is a structured and layered training program that isolates the core of the body as the main stabilizing component for the arms and legs. The basic keys to core stabilization are the foundation to every movement in the system. As a Pilates technician, I live by the principle of stabilization first, movement second. I teach clients to become aware of their bodies by tracking their ability to stabilize from the correct muscle engagement before, during and after movement.
Breath is Life
I believe in the importance of effective and practical breath training in order to achieve the fullest potential of the Pilates repertoire on the mat and equipment to achieve optimum human physical development.
Breath is Life
Use of proper Pilates breathing technique supports the stabilization of the deep core muscles and provides the rhythmical framework for the release of excess tension in the body. Correct breath training has the potential for increased lung capacity as well as efficient oxygen delivery into the system. Coordinating the breath keeps us present in the intention of the movement. The breathing patterns that are contained in each Pilates exercise are essential to the achievement of improved physical capabilities.
